How to Recognize an Earwig Problem
Earwigs measure from 1/4 inch to 1 inch long. They have long, narrow bodies with six legs, antennae, and noticeable rear pincers. Their coloring ranges from pale brown with dark markings to reddish brown or black.
Indoors, earwigs are often found in bathrooms, damp laundry rooms, basements, and around damp paper. Outdoor activity commonly develops near vegetable gardens, debris piles, and other moist areas. Finding several indoors can indicate access through gaps or nearby moisture and shelter.
Despite their appearance, earwigs don’t transmit disease or ordinarily bite people. Their pincers may look threatening, but a pinch is unlikely to break the skin. European earwigs generally don’t attack people, although one may bite if trapped in clothing or accidentally sat upon.
