Powderpost Beetles
Powderpost Beetles
A type of wood-destroying insect, powderpost beetles are capable of reducing a piece of wood into a fine pile of dust. There are approximately 70 species of powderpost beetles, and their appearance and wood preferences vary by species. In general, these insects are reddish-brown, and their bodies are long, narrow, and flat. They have two eleven-segmented antennae with distinctive two-segmented clubs at their ends. Female powderpost beetles lay their eggs in pieces of wood; after the larvae emerge from the eggs, they feed on the wood – causing damage to it.
Their larvae are white and shaped like the letter “C.” The larval stage is the life stage that causes the most damage to wood infested with these destructive, wood-eating pests. Powderpost beetle larvae eat sugar, starch, and protein found in wood.
