Mosquitos
Mosquitoes are unwanted, fly-like insects that live and breed on properties in large numbers. Adults have narrow, oval-shaped bodies with long legs that dangle down when flying, and long, thin mouthparts (proboscis) they use for feeding. They also have one pair of wings, covered in fine hair.
Female mosquitoes “bite” using their proboscis to feed on the blood of animals and people to get the protein necessary to produce viable eggs. Both males and females also use their proboscis to feed on plant nectar their primary source of food.

FAQs
With over 3,000 species of mosquitoes living worldwide, these insects pose a significant danger to people and animals. The female feeds on a wide variety of hosts, allowing them to pick up and transmit a wide range of diseases to people and animals. In the United States, the West Nile virus and encephalitis are examples of diseases mosquitoes spread. They also infect dogs with potentially fatal parasitic heartworms.
Where ever mosquitoes are living, breeding, and feeding, they have the uncanny ability to ruin any outdoor event. Mosquitoes swarm together in large numbers and deliver painful bites that become very itchy. Excessive itching of the bite sites may lead to a secondary infection.
Warm, wet environments attract mosquitoes and allow them to thrive. During the spring, summer, and fall, when the weather is hot and humid, mosquitoes are most active. They lay their eggs in standing water, and once the larvae hatch, they live and feed in the water until they emerge as adults. Properties with or near standing water have the most problems with mosquitoes. Swamps, wooded areas, drainage ditches, flood plains, ponds, and lakes are where you’ll find mosquitoes in large numbers.
You will find that mosquitoes are most active at dusk and dawn when the weather is at its coolest. During the middle of the day, to escape the heat, mosquitoes hide in tall grass, behind tree bark, under tree canopies, in dense shrubbery, and under decks. In our yards, mosquitoes swarm around areas of standing water. Examples of where water builds up in our yards include trash cans, flowerpots, clogged gutters, low-lying areas in driveways, wading pools, and wheelbarrows.
Mosquitoes, on the whole, are outdoor pests, yet they do find their way inside our homes and other buildings. They get inside through open doors or windows or torn screens while searching for food.

- Avoid using old barn wood inside your home.
- Paint or stain the wood in, on, or around your home.
- Use dehumidifiers and air-conditioners to reduce the amount of moisture in your home.
- Do not store furniture that you eventually want to bring indoors inside barns, sheds, or garages.
